A talk by Wayne Perkins BA (Hons) ACIfA (Associate Member, Charted Institute for Archaeologists) will be talking about:
3 Castles in Kent: Fortified Against Maleficium!
Tonbridge, Deal & Upnor -three very different castles located in Kent – what do they have in common?
Tonbridge Castle was built by Richard FitzGilbert not long after the Conquest of 1066. Its original foundation in the form of a motte-and-bailey was subsumed into the later medieval fortifications. Deal Castle was built on the orders of Henry VIII as one of a string of coastal defences with embrasures to hold 66 cannons. Finally, Upnor Castle is an Elizabethan-era castle, built to defend the dockyard of the Royal Navy on the River Medway.
All three castles are exemplary examples of the art of war - harnessing not only the most up to date firing power but also utilising the latest military architecture to ensure the best chance of being able to defend against their attackers.
Yet beyond the military fortifications it would seem that the soldiers who lived and worked there also feared a less physical foe – all three castles possess apotropaic markings, ritual protection marks and other signs that their inhabitants had guarded against supernatural threats, be it evil spirits, ghosts or the machinations of witches and their familiars!
