2026 New Moons Ink Art Lecture | Lee Chun-YiSun 25 Oct | 2 - 3.30pm | National Gallery Singapore, City Hall Wing, Level B1, The Ngee Ann Kongsi Auditorium | Free, registration required: https://www.nationalgallery.sg/sg/en/talks/New-Moons-Ink-Art-Lecture-Lee-Chun-Yi-2026.html
“Seek first to be unique, and then to be excellent.” – Ink master Liu Kuo-sung once shared these words with his students, encouraging them to keep experimentation at the very heart of artistic creation.
As one of Liu’s most accomplished students, Lee draws on the traditional art of stone-rubbing and inscriptions to develop an ink technique entirely his own: by varying the pressure and direction of cork stamping, he controls the density and moisture of the ink to conjure layered mountain ranges.
This lecture invites artist Lee Chun-Yi to share his own artistic explorations and reflections in Chinese ink. Departing from Liu Kuo-sung’s pedagogy and ink experimentation, he will offer a fresh interpretation of a defining ideal in classical Chinese painting: “poetry within painting, and painting within poetry”.
*The lecture will be delivered in Mandarin, with simultaneous interpretation (Mandarin to English) available on site.

About the artist (关于艺术家)
Drawing inspiration from the traditional Chinese arts of ink rubbing and woodblock carving, Lee Chun-Yi replaces the conventional use of an ink brush with small square seals carved from softwood, which he stamps repeatedly, dot by dot, to build up landscapes of delicacy and grandeur.
His work has been shown in the group exhibition "Lines, Forms, Qi: Calligraphic Art from the Foundation INK Collection" at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the 2025 Hengshan Calligraphy Art Biennale, and A Tradition Redefined: Gifts from the Li Family Collection of Chinese Painting at the Phoenix Art Museum. His works have been collected by the Ashmolean Museum of the University of Oxford, the Arthur M. Sackler Museum at Harvard University, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco, and the Hong Kong Museum of Art. He also served as a co-curator of “International Contemporary Ink Art Special Exhibition”, as part of the 10th Beijing International Art Biennale.

About the lecture series
The New Moons Ink Art Lecture series is National Gallery Singapore’s bi-annual programme on ink art, one of the oldest art forms in the world. Inspired by master ink artist Liu Kuo-sung’s epic landscapes and his various innovations in ink art, the programme embraces the manifold possibilities of ink – both as a medium and a form of expression. As the title implies, this series endeavours to celebrate various trajectories of ink art in its plurality and hybridity, just as the moon cycles through the multiple lunar phases. By highlighting regional and international scholarship on ink art, the programme investigates how the art form continues to be relevant today.
