About this Event
Join us for the HDCA’s flagship event of the year, the annual Mahbub ul Haq Lecture, featuring Winnie Byanyima (UNAIDS Executive Director) at UCL's Institute of Education.
This year’s lecture is titled “Whose Rules, Whose Freedom? Women and the Right to Capability, Opportunity and Security in a Fractured World Order”.
Hosted as a hybrid session, the event will feature a talk by Ms. Byanyima followed by a live discussion chaired by Sridhar Venkatapuram (HDCA Vice-President and Associate Professor of Global Health and Philosophy at King's College London).
The lecture will explore whose interests shape the rules of a fractured world - and what those rules mean for women’s freedom to live, have agency, and thrive, especially in the context of present-day challenges such as online violence, AI and the rise of powerful anti-rights actors and movements. Drawing initially on the struggle against AIDS, it will examine how unequal power - at household, societal and global levels - constrains women’s capabilities, opportunities and security. It will end by exploring how social movements, feminist leadership and global solidarity might reshape those rules to put human development first.
Further details regarding the physical room and venue at the UCL Institute of Education will be updated here shortly. For those joining online, a direct streaming link will be sent to registered attendees prior to the event.
This lecture is organised by the Human Development and Capability Association (HDCA), a global community of academics and practitioners that seeks to build an intellectual community around the ideas of human development and the capability approach, and relate these ideas to the policy arena.
