As was the case at the inaugural memorial commemorating the day the SS Edmund Fitzgerald was lost, there will be chicken paprikash, dumplings, and other foods that were commonly served onboard of this iconic Great Lakes freighter during year end voyages.Weather permitting (we never know when the gales of November come calling), there will be a bonfire and appropriate accompaniments.
The start time coincides with one of the last transmissions from the ship. At 7:20, there will be the memorially ring of a bell, 29 times, plus 1 (for those souls lost on November 10, 1975 plus one for all who have been lost on the Great Lakes).
At 5:30 PM on November 10, 1975 Captain Ernest McSorley was overheard on the radio by Whitefish Point saying he had lost both radars and was taking heavy waters over the deck in one of the worst seas he had ever been in.
One hour and 40 minutes later would be the last message from the SS Edmund Fitzgerald where McSorley said "we are holding our own."
At 7:20 PM, the mighty Fitz fell off the radar.
It was the last freighter to sink on the Great Lakes.
