About this Event

Women's organizations and history students are invited to attend the 45th Anniversary of the 1977 National Women's Conference in Houston.

We will start with a photo by the historical marker located at The Hobby Center (3 blocks away, at 800 Bagby Street). Then, we will do a processional to a reception at The Heritage Society (1100 Bagby Street) that includes brilliant speakers, artists, and authors, at our museum gallery. We would love to do a re-enactment of the passing of the torch in a marathon that was held, this will be held in front of Sam Houston Park (1000 Bagby Street) where there is plenty of sidewalk space.

This is a free event and requires a RSVP. The reception includes wine and light bites. (We will be requiring I.D.s, must be the legal age of 21 to be served wine). Free parking is available at 212 Dallas Street. Since we are doing a re-enactment, we encourage attendees to dress up in 1970s attire, especially marathon sports attire (best outfits and characters will win prizes).

Speakers include:

  • Annise Parker, former Mayor of Houston
  • Dr. Leandra Zarnow, Director of Undergraduate Studies & Associate Professor, Department of History, University of Houston
  • Dr. Karen Kossie-Chernyshev, Professor of History at Texas Southern University
  • Dr. Annie Benifield, President of the League of Women Voters - Houston
  • Rae Bryant of the Houston Suffragists Project
  • More guest speakers to be added and/or acknowledged

Students from the University of Houston will be conducting video interviews of those who were moved by conference for their Sharing Stories 1977 Project. Did you attend the 1977 National Women's Conference or watch it on television as a child? Join us and share more!

Authors of Women's history topics and Artists of Women's history will also showcase their works:

  • Carolyn Marks Johnson (bronze collar sculpture honoring her friend Barbara Jordan)
  • Anne Sloan (a book about Houston that reflects the 1977 National Women's Conference)
  • Professors' books about Women's history

If you are a leader of a Women's organization, would like to be a sponsor, or have questions, please contact [email protected].

We look forward to gathering and reflecting on this historic Houston event!
