About this Event
With Sir Redmond Barry as President of the Trustees and Augustus Tulk as Chief Librarian, the Library grew its selection of books from around the globe aspiring to replicate the great libraries of Europe. Open to all, it was conceived as an emporium of knowledge for all, regardless of class or status.
Over the centuries the Library has evolved to be one of the most visited libraries in the world with a collection of more than 4.5 million items. It offers an extraordinary range of services for Victorians and other researchers around the globe.
In this Symposium you will hear experts talk about the Library’s history, its architecture and collections. You will hear stories of the people who have contributed to creating an internationally recognised powerhouse of knowledge and engagement with the community.
Throughout the day, you’ll also hear from leading minds on the evolution of the State Library, its vision and role from colony to an institution supporting research, communities and digital futures. Learn about the design of the Library, and some of the challenges in creating a world class institution and the treasures unearthed from the vaults.
