"Quien lo vive, es quien lo goza" is a popular carnival expression that means “whoever lives it, enjoys it”. It is a phrase that not only expresses adoration for the Barranquilla Carnival, but signifies that in the throws of carnival, you are more than just a spectator.

Take a walk through the world of the Barranquilla Carnival and experience its festive energy through displays of detailed photographs taken by Leon Birbragher Vinkel, cultural costumes and iconic characters, theatrical sets adorning exhibition corners, projected video footage of La Guacherna and Batalla de Flores, and playlists curated by Tato Marenco.
As the exhibition makes its final rounds at the Coral Gables Museum, we invite you to a special Link + Learn lecture led by the exhibition’s curator, Dr. Francine Birbragher-Rozencwaig.
Author of Popular Expression to Public Spectacle: History & Visual Testimonies of the Carnaval de Barranquilla in ** & XXI Centuries, Dr. Birbragher-Rozencwaig will delve into the Carnival’s rich history, cultural fusions, imagery, symbolism, festivities, and iconic figures.
Admission to the lecture includes access to view the exhibition. Attendees will also have the opportunity to purchase Dr. Birbragher-Rozencwaig’s book for $75 + tax and have the author sign their copy. Museum members receive 10% off the book purchase.

About the Speaker
Dr. Francine Birbragher-Rozencwaig is a Chicago-born art historian, independent curator, and art critic who specializes in Latin American and Caribbean art and culture. Having earned her master's in art history and a Ph. D in Latin American History from the University of Miami, Birbragher-Rozencwaig has authored a variety of texts for magazines, newspapers, monographs, catalogs, and original research publications.
Her authorship includes but is not limited to her editorial work for ArtNexus and Letra Urbana, her book Essays on 20th Century Latin American Art, and her dissertation From Popular Expression to Public Spectacle: History & Visual Testimonies of the Carnaval de Barranquilla in the ** and XXI Centuries.
In her curatorial work, Francine Birbragher has served as an adjunct curator at Florida International University’s Phillip & Patricia Frost Museum, co-curated the 23rd Bienal de Arte in Guatemala alongside Juan Canela, and curated over 100 exhibitions in Latin America and the United States combined. Birbragher serves on various advisory boards, including the MOCA in North Miami, the John & Mable Ringling Museum in Sarasota, the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, & the Foundation Arts Broward.
