About this Event
A 14Y Selah Recovery Shabbaton in Riverdale
November 13–14, 2026
Join 14Y Selah for a special two-day Recovery Shabbaton in partnership with Rabbi Yali Szulanski and the Riverdale community.
Rooted in Parashat Toldot, this Shabbaton invites us to explore the stories that shape our lives and the blessings we discover when we share them with honesty, compassion, and courage.
Yaakov and Esav each carry their own version of the same family story. They experience the same home differently, interpret the same events differently, and spend much of their lives searching for the blessing they believe is meant for them.
Our lives are no different.
Each of us carries a story that has shaped who we are. Some chapters are filled with joy, while others hold pain, loss, or uncertainty. In recovery, healing often begins when we stop running from our story and begin telling it with honesty, compassion, and courage. We discover that our past does not define us. Instead, it becomes part of the wisdom we bring into the world.
As Thanksgiving approaches, Toldot also invites us to reflect on the blessings woven throughout our own journeys. Gratitude does not ask us to ignore hardship. Instead, it invites us to recognize the resilience we've cultivated, the people who have walked beside us, and the communities that have helped carry us forward.
Weekend Experience
Friday Evening dinner starts at 6pm
We'll begin by joining the Riverdale community for Kabbalat Shabbat services at the Hebrew Institute of Riverdale. Following services, we'll gather around the Shabbat table for a shared kosher dinner featuring meaningful conversation, storytelling, and reflection. Together, we'll begin exploring the stories we carry and how sharing them with one another creates connection, belonging, and healing. After the meal anyone wishing to explore deeper will be invited to experience the start of our healing weekend together.
Saturday | 12:30–5:20 PM
The weekend continues with a community lunch followed by an interactive retreat featuring Rabbi Yali Szulanski and Jeremy Pool. Through Jewish learning, guided reflection, experiential workshops, and small-group conversation, we'll explore how the stories we inherit, the stories we tell ourselves, and the stories we choose to share shape our lives and our recovery. We conclude our time together with Havdalah as we carry the blessings of Shabbat into the week ahead.
Whether recovery is part of your own story, the story of someone you love, or you're simply seeking a welcoming Jewish community grounded in connection and belonging, there is a place for you at the table.
At 14Y Selah, we believe every story belongs at the table. Every shared meal, every honest conversation, and every person who walks through our doors reminds us that healing happens in community.
Substance-free. Spirit-filled. All are welcome.
