About this Event

Literature is not only about writing, but also about reading, judgment, and the ability to think independently in one’s own time. As literature gradually loses its influence in public life, and criticism becomes increasingly constrained by the market, the media, and power, why do we still need literary criticism?

Writer and critic Li Jing began her literary career in Beijing in the 1990s. As a young editor, she worked with important Chinese writer Wang Xiaobo. During her time at Beijing Literature, she published his short fiction and literary criticism and tried unsuccessfully to bring his novel Hongfu Yeben (Hongfu Flees at Night) into print. That unfulfilled editorial effort became a formative experience in her understanding of literary institutions and creative freedom, profoundly shaping her later criticism and playwriting. From literary journals to newspaper literary supplements, and from literary criticism to broader cultural commentary, Li Jing has witnessed nearly three decades of change in Chinese literature and public culture.

This conversation begins with Li Jing’s encounters with Wang Xiaobo and looks back at the intellectual atmosphere of Chinese literature in the 1990s. It explores how Wang’s commitment to freedom, reason, and humor influenced a generation of writers, while considering the role and dilemmas of editors within literary institutions. Can criticism remain independent today? What kind of intellectual freedom can literature still offer individuals? And how might we rethink the responsibilities of intellectuals in society?
