Community Conversations | When Cultural Motifs Go Digital: Borrowing, Transformation, and Boundaries in Contemporary Indigenous Visual Art
When traditional carvings and woven patterns become digital lines, does their spirit come with them?
Traditional Māori wood carving (whakairo) carries the warmth of the artist’s hands, generations of knowledge, and deep spiritual significance. Across Indigenous cultures, woven patterns and designs tell stories of family, ancestry, and identity.
But what happens when we open Adobe Illustrator and turn ancestral designs into prints, merchandise, or brand logos?
Where does creative transformation begin, and where should we draw the line?
As Indigenous designs become increasingly popular in contemporary art, fashion, and commercial branding, important questions arise:
What does genuine cultural respect and dialogue look like? And when does inspiration cross the line into cultural appropriation?
For this special evening of conversation, we bring together Siyat Moses, a contemporary visual artist from Taiwan’s Seediq Nation, and Māori artists from Taki Māori, a family of cultural practitioners from Aotearoa New Zealand.
Across the Pacific, they’ll share perspectives on the relationship between traditional cultural knowledge and contemporary visual expression, exploring how Indigenous artists can embrace digital technologies while maintaining ownership, agency, and authority over their cultural heritage.
Join us for an evening of art, culture, and conversation.
Whether you’re an artist, designer, student, or simply curious about the stories and responsibilities behind Indigenous visual culture, you’re warmly invited to be part of the dialogue.
