(ENGLISH)
A Contemporary Perspective on Conveying the Sentiments Embodied in a Garden Over 370 Years Old—A Conversation with the Gardeners of Ueya Kato Landscaping at Shoseien
Shoseien Garden (Kikoku-tei), a scenic spot within Higashi Hongan-ji Temple and the main venue for the Kyōto YouMe Triennale. Ueya Kato Landscaping, founded in the first year of the Kaei era of the Edo period (1848), is responsible for the maintenance, management, and utilization of this vast garden. Their philosophy—which views the garden not as a “finished product” to be preserved, but as a “living environment” to be nurtured—along with their landscaping techniques, as well as their approach to managing a garden teeming with diverse life—rooted in the unique philosophy of Jōdo Shinshū—and their collaborative efforts with nearby hotels and other organizations. While on-site gardeners share these insights at Shōseien, they will join Hiroyuki Anzai—Chair of the Kyōto YouMe Triennale Executive Committee and a Milan-based business and cultural designer—to unravel the fundamental message that the beauty and philosophy born from the collaboration between human hands and nature convey to contemporary society.
