Have you ever observed yourself in sleep, in movement, in solitude... in the process of relating to your own body and self?..
On Friday, November 6, at 19:00, we invite you to Nia Janeli's photography exhibition at Cube in Context.
The exhibition explores the human condition across different dimensions, examining our relationship with our bodies and ourselves. Created at different times and in different environments, the works bring together observations of human vulnerability, our relationship with our surroundings, and states of temporary detachment from reality. In sleep, in movement, in solitude...
The exhibition brings together three independent photographic series developed by Nia Janeli over several years: “When I Worry, I Fall Asleep”, “Birds of Boltenhagen”, and “The Heart Is Empty”.
“When I Worry, I Fall Asleep”
This documentary photographic series captures portraits of people asleep in unusual and often uncomfortable places. The artist explores sleep as a state of temporary detachment from the world, observing the point where exhaustion, grief, or despair intersects with the body's instinct for self-preservation.
The transition into a metaphysical state, a temporary withdrawal from everyday existence, can become a mechanism of self-preservation in such moments. The body continues to exist on an armchair, a bed, a car seat, or a bench, while consciousness seems to have temporarily switched off. The only difference between an inanimate surface and you is that you can breathe.
“Birds of Boltenhagen”
The series brings together landscapes and seascapes photographed in Germany, Georgia, Greece, Poland, and France. Although visually similar, the photographs are distinguished by different human states and relationships with water — the sea, the shore, and the horizon.
The artist writes about the series:
“This series covers the period when I was living in Germany, when Datenschutz (data protection and privacy regulations) led me to come up with all sorts of tricks to photograph people. Photographing children proved particularly difficult — their watchful parents wouldn't let me get close to them. Nevertheless, I managed to capture children running through my lens.
Beyond German waters, the series includes photographs of the Black Sea, the Aegean Sea, and many other bodies of water. It explores human movement and our relationship with water: how our mood and anatomy change when we stand close to the shore and the distant expanse of the sea makes us feel like the smallest beings in existence; how the human body merges with the landscape, the horizon, the sand, and the stone.”
“The Heart Is Empty”
The third photographic series consists of the artist's self-portraits, preserving some of the most difficult and depressive, yet profoundly transformative periods of her life.
Against a backdrop of fragile memory, derealisation, and depersonalisation, the series becomes a process of self-observation, searching for oneself and rediscovering the self.
It is a journey stripped of eroticism. The duality between body and soul is captured through an artificially constructed mechanism — the camera lens. Here, the gaze does not stop at the surface: it seems to cut through the skin, reaching beyond the body towards a deeper state of being.
🎟️ Free admission.
