Many Silicon Valley engineers have backyards, and Yuri Panchul uses his backyard as a nursery to hybridize a fall-flowering shrub, Camellia sasanqua. Every year a camellia hybridizer seeds from fifty to a hundred plants, and after five to seven years they start blooming. A few of the most beautiful seedlings with distinct individuality get selected as cultivated variety (cultivar) candidates. They get observed for four more years before they can be registered with the American and International Camellia Societies.
So far Yuri Panchul has registered two cultivars: 'Silicon Valley' and 'Sunnyvale Carnival', but several more are coming. In this presentation, he shows his cultivars and the methods of growing, crossing and grafting. You can get some of Yuri Panchul's plants at Our City Forest Community Nursery in San Jose, where Yuri donates some of his plants.
We also touch on plant biology. Humans have two sets of chromosomes, but the fall-flowering shrub Camellia sasanqua may have three, four, five or six - the most common number. A mutation of a plant gene that affects its gibberellin hormone production can make a plant with very short distances between leaves, looking like a pangolin or a knight in armour. Other mutations can make flowers with stripes or convert stamens into petal-like petaloids.
How do scientists know about certain hybridization events that occurred in medieval Japan and brought to us pink-flowering cultivars (the wild Camellia sasanqua has only white flowers)? We will discuss this and similar topics during our presentation.
