📅 On October 6 at 11:00 AM, the History Museum of Armenia will open a remarkable international exhibition entitled “Ani: The Thousand and One Afterlives of the Medieval Armenian Capital․“ The exhibition is a new interpretation of material presented at the Petőfi Literary Museum in Budapest in March–April 2026. It explores the ruined city of Ani, the medieval Armenian capital, through the various academic, preservationist, symbolic, and commemorative narratives and perceptions it generates in Armenian culture and beyond.
🏛️At the History Museum of Armenia, the multifaceted afterlives of Ani will be presented through a distinctive combination of museum collections preserved from the Archaeological Site of Ani, as well as other original cultural artefacts. The exhibition presented in Budapest will acquire a new meaning at the History Museum of Armenia, becoming part of a unique narrative continuum alongside the museum’s permanent exhibition sections dedicated to the Archaeological Site of Ani and the city of Ani.
The exhibition will retain the multimedia approach of the original exhibition concept, allowing museum visitors access not only to museum collections, but also to archival photographs, works of art, publications, rare documentary films, and other materials.
🤝 The exhibition results from the collaboration between the History Museum of Armenia, the Leibniz Institute for the History and Culture of Eastern Europe (GWZO) in Leipzig, Freie Universität Berlin, and the Department of Armenian Studies at Pázmány Péter Catholic University in Budapest.
📍The exhibition also features original objects from the National Archives of Armenia, the Yeghishe Charents Museum of Literature and Art, and the History Museum of Yerevan.
🖋️The research leading to this exhibition was part of the Lost-but-found: Armenian Capital Ani at Contested Crossroads project funded by the Gerda Henkel Foundation.
