About this Event
Yūzen is a dyeing technique that emerged in Kyoto in the 17th century and is still used today for the most elaborate kimono. What makes it distinctive: a fine rice paste is applied to the silk to form outlines that keep the colours from bleeding into one another. The result is crisp lines and flowing gradients on the same piece of cloth, almost like a painting.
In this workshop you work with real silk and the original materials. You learn how the paste is laid down, how the colour behaves in the weave, and why every brushstroke has to land. Your finished piece is yours to take home.
The workshop is led by a Japanese master artisan who travels to Berlin for Craftkai. The group is limited to four or five people so that everyone gets direct guidance.
No prior experience is needed. All materials are included in the price.
