About this Event
What do we carry from the people who came before us? Join us for an afternoon of sharing stories, personal objects, and family history as part of YOUR FRUIT TASTES SWEET, I TASTE SWEAT.
We invite you to bring one object that connects to sweetness or labor in your family, culture, or personal history. It might be a photograph, recipe, letter, piece of clothing, tool, or something passed down to you.
When you arrive, you'll have the option to sign up for a brief 2–3-minute Show & Tell to share your object and the story behind it. There's no pressure to speak. You're just as welcome to come listen.
A printer and scanner will be available for anyone who wants to scan or make a copy of a personal photograph or document. Sharing and scanning are optional, and your materials remain yours.
Free and open to the community.
About the exhibition:
Your Fruit Tastes Sweet, I Taste Sweat examines systems of labor, migration, extraction, memory, and care through the movement of Central American people, histories, materials, and traditions into Los Angeles.
Tracing connections between Central America and the metropolitan landscape of Los Angeles, the exhibition considers how histories of agricultural labor, migration, colonial extraction, ecology, and cultural memory travel across borders and generations. This interdisciplinary exhibition looks particularly at how these systems become visible through the first-generation experience—via inherited memory, family histories, food, labor, cultural adaptation, and the ongoing negotiation between where one comes from and where one is building a life.
The exhibition asks audiences to consider what is carried across generations, what is transformed through migration, and what histories remain hidden beneath the things we consume.
This exhibit is made possible in part by a grant from the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs.
