About this Event
South Carolina is battling one of the most significant invasive insect pests it has ever faced, and the low country is on the front lines. The yellow-legged hornet, Vespa velutina, was confirmed in Savannah, GA in 2023 and is spreading inland and up the coast where it has been observed all the way to Charleston. This hornet is a major pest of honey bees and other beneficial insects and is problematic in fruit orchards and vineyards. This hornet is a large stinging wasp that frequently builds nests on and around human structures and defends its nest when disturbed. The state is working diligently to remove these hornet nests to protect beekeepers, native pollinators, and human health but officials need help from the public to locate and report nests. Beekeepers, garden clubs, conservation groups, pest control professionals, local/state agency personnel, and elected officials are encouraged to attend to learn about the status and impacts of this new invasive species as well as to discuss current and future control efforts.
The meeting is hosted by the Clemson University Apiculture and Pollinator Program and the Clemson Department of Plant Industry’s Invasive Species Program. Participants will hear from the experts working intimately with this novel pest and can provide questions and commentary in this open form meeting. The event is free and open to the public.
