An Evening with Keneihu & Shawma Yawanawá of Mutum Village
Yawanawá Journey is honoured to welcome Keneihu & Shawma Yawanawá of Mutum Village, Acre, Brazil for an intimate evening of song, prayer, storytelling and Hapé during their time in Toronto.
Traveling from their home in the Brazilian Amazon, Keneihu and Shawma will share songs, stories and traditions from their culture and the Yawanawá way of life.
This evening is an opportunity to gather with them, listen to the songs they carry, learn more about their traditions and spend time together in prayer, music and connection.
🌿 Keneihu & Shawma Yawanawá
Keneihu and Shawma come from Mutum Village, within the Yawanawá Indigenous Territory in Acre, Brazil.
Their lives and work are rooted in their community, their traditions and their relationship with the forest. Through song, prayer, ceremony and their travels, they share aspects of Yawanawá culture with people around the world while remaining deeply connected to their home in Mutum.
During their time in Ontario, they will be sharing several opportunities to gather, including this smaller Song & Hapé Circle.
🌿 The Yawanawá
The Yawanawá are an Indigenous people of the Brazilian Amazon whose ancestral territory lies along the Gregório River in the state of Acre.
Song, prayer, storytelling, plant knowledge, art and relationship with the forest are woven throughout Yawanawá life and tradition.
Their songs, known as saitis, carry stories, teachings and relationships with the natural and spiritual world. Today, Yawanawá singers and musicians continue to carry these songs within their communities and share them beyond the forest.
This evening offers an opportunity to experience some of these traditions directly in the presence of Keneihu and Shawma.
🍃 About the Hapé Circle
Hapé (also known as rapé) is a traditional Amazonian preparation made with tobacco and other plants.
During the evening, Keneihu and Shawma will share about Hapé from their cultural perspective, along with stories and teachings from the Yawanawá tradition.
Those who choose to participate will have the opportunity to receive Hapé while Keneihu and Shawma share songs, music and prayer.
Receiving Hapé is completely optional. You are equally welcome to attend without receiving Hapé and simply be present for the songs, stories and gathering.

• Extra cash if you would like to purchase handmade jewelry, art or other items available during the evening
We recommend eating beforehand, as food will not be available for purchase during the gathering.
