Dr Chelsea Batty
Principal Lecturer in Sport

About the lecture

Exercise rehabilitation is increasingly recognised as an essential part of high-quality cancer care. Regular physical activity before, during, and after treatment can improve function, reduce side effects, and enhance quality of life, yet access remains inconsistent. This lecture explores why exercise rehabilitation should be embedded as a routine component of cancer care, drawing on the latest evidence and clinical experience. Particular attention will be given to people with rare and aggressive cancers, who are often excluded from research and rehabilitation programmes. We will discuss why inclusion matters and how equitable, personalised rehabilitation can improve outcomes for all people affected by cancer.

About the speaker

Dr Batty is Principal Lead for Sport, a Chartered Scientist, and an Accredited Exercise Scientist (CASES). Her work has focused on using exercise rehabilitation to improve health outcomes, initially within cardiac rehabilitation before expanding into cancer rehabilitation.

Following the refusal of cancer exercise rehabilitation for her mother, who was diagnosed with the rare combination of Plasma Cell Leukaemia (PCL) and multiple myeloma (MM), Dr Batty qualified as a Cancer Exercise Rehabilitation Instructor to deliver a safe, evidence-based rehabilitation programme herself.
