Diane Hinds spent more than thirty years working in public relations before she sat down to write a novel about a period of history hardly anyone in Britain learns about. Conquerabia: The Struggle for Identity traces Trinidad's story from Columbus's arrival in 1498 through Spanish colonial rule, the island's handover to Britain in 1797, and the governorship of Thomas Picton.On Thursday 5th November, Diane joins us at Exeter Library to talk through the years of research behind the book and the decisions involved in turning a colonial history she was never taught into fiction. She'll cover her research process, the balance between accuracy and storytelling, and what goes into bringing silenced voices back onto the page. The talk runs around 45 minutes, with time for questions afterwards. Copies of Conquerabia will be available to buy and get signed.
Diane's talks have taken her to libraries and Business & Intellectual Property Centres across the UK and the US, including Wokingham, Essex, Coventry, Cardiff, Wirral, Barking & Dagenham, Kensington & Chelsea, and Southern Nevada. She's appeared on BBC Radio London and featured in Welsh Country and blacknews.uk.
