Writing and the City: A Creative Writing Panel at Exeter Library

Three acclaimed writers. One theme. Sixty minutes of readings, conversation, and ideas.
Hosted by the Royal Literary Fund, Britain's oldest literary charity, this panel brings together poets, novelists, and playwrights Edson Burton, Rebecca Tantony, and Babs Horton for an evening exploring what it means to write about cities — and to write from within them.
Each writer will read a short original piece in response to the theme "Writing and the City," before joining a chaired discussion on craft, identity, and the writer's voice. The evening closes with a 15-minute audience Q&A — your chance to put your questions directly to the panel.
Edson Burton is a poet, playwright, performer, storyteller and historian based in Bristol. He has written five plays for BBC Radio, worked with Bristol Old Vic as an Associate Artist, and co-founded Black theatre company Dip & Fall Back. His academic work spans Afrofuturism, the Transatlantic Slave Trade, and race and representation.
Rebecca Tantony is the author of three poetry and flash nonfiction collections, all published by Burning Eye Books. She has been commissioned by BBC Radio 4 and has read her work at the Royal Albert Hall, the Natural History Museum, and the Southbank Centre, among many others. She teaches at Arvon and curates literature programmes for Bath Festival, Shambala, and Bristol Harbourside Festival.
Babs Horton is an award-winning novelist and playwright whose debut novel, A Jarful of Angels, won the Pendleton May First Novel Award and was shortlisted for the Authors Club Award. She runs creative writing workshops in schools and universities, and works with the RLF on their initiative placing professional writers in Child and Adolescent Mental Health units across the UK.
This is a one-off event hosted at Exeter Library as part of the Royal Literary Fund's public programme across the South West.
Tickets are £4 per person. Booking is required. No refreshments are provided, but you're welcome to bring your own.
