WRITER’S PLAYGROUND: THE STORIES THAT SHAPE US
Exploring Your Story Through the Hero’s Journey
Every great story has a turning point. So does every life.
Whether writing memoir or fictional characters may be fictional - the emotions, struggles, choices, relationships, and turning points we write about are often rooted in our own lived experiences.
This month at Writer’s Playground, we’ll use the Hero’s Journey as a framework for exploring an aspect of our own story—from the inciting incident that set something in motion, through challenges, choices, and discoveries, to breakthrough, transformation, or a new understanding.
You can use the prompts to explore something autobiographical or allow your own experiences to inspire fiction, memoir, poetry, or whatever wants to emerge on the page.
This isn’t about having a perfectly polished story—or even knowing how it ends. It’s about getting curious about the experiences that have shaped us and discovering what happens when we look at them through the eyes of a storyteller.
At Writer’s Playground, you’ll find:
Writing Prompts to get the words flowing
Techniques & Tools to strengthen your writing
Giving & Receiving Feedback in a supportive environment
Inspiration & Accountability to help you keep writing
Come ready to write, explore, and see where your story takes you. New and experienced writers are equally welcome.
You're also invited to join Poet Laureate Nadia Sims from 10a-11:30a for the monthly 2nd Saturday POET-TEA and/or to come back at 3pm for a public presenation of the participants in the ROOTS RUN DEEP Story Lab starting on Sept. 30th.
Free to attend. Bring a notebook, your ideas, and an open mind.
