Jim Shepard is considered to be one of the great American writers of our time. We don't say that lightly or without evidence. His accumulated enough awards to sink any self-respecting ship. (Such as the Lusitania.) His short story collections and award winning novels often take us to wildly diverse parts of the world in years or decades or centuries past.
Cataclysmic events--both manmade and natural--form the backdrop for the crop of stories in his new collection, The Queen of Bad Influences. From the Lusitania to pre-revolutionary Boston, from the Civil War's South to 16th C. Madrid, Shepard infuses his stories with wry and dark humor as nature and war have their say--reminding us that in the blink of an eye what we once understood can all just disappear. The miracle of Shepard's storytelling is the proof of underlying humanity that we all share, from century to century.
While Jim Shepard might be one of America's great writers, he's got a legion of devoted former students whose success is dazzling. Alex Edelman describes himself as "award-winning stand-up comedian, writer, and Jew." If you missed Just for Us, his one man show at the Mark Taper a few years ago, beg him to bring it back. Or stream it. That show brought him an Emmy and a Tony Award. There's a reason people swoon at the mention of Alex coming to town.
