Save the Date: Come Write on the Lake. Afternoon Write-In with Highland Park Poet Laureate, Laura Joyce-Hubbard. Thursday, Nov 5th, 1pm - 4:00pm. Rosewood Interpretive Center.
We’ll be treated to special guest, novelist Abby Geni. After her reading, we'll free-write in response to conversation and generative prompts. Please bring pen and paper.
If you have a current project you're working on, please bring that as well. You're welcome to work on whatever fills your pages.
is a novelist and short story writer. Children of the Wolf, her most recent novel, is one of People's Must Reads for Fall. She is the author of The Body Farm, longlisted for the Joyce Carol Oates Prize and the Story Prize; The Wildlands, a finalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize; The Lightkeepers, winner of the Barnes & Noble Discover Award and the Chicago Review of Books Awards; and The Last Animal, a finalist for the Orion Book Award. Her short stories and essays have appeared in dozens of literary publications, including Best American Mystery and Suspense, The Missouri Review, Epoch, Ninth Letter, and New Stories from the Midwest. Geni is a faculty member at StoryStudio Chicago and a recipient of the Iowa Fellowship.
is the inaugural Highland Park Poet Laureate. Her work appears in Poetry, The Iowa Review, The Sewanee Review, the Chicago Tribune, and elsewhere. She was named a 2024 National Poetry Series Finalist and Prairie Schooner Raz-Shumaker Book Prize Finalist. Her nonfiction was “Notable” in The Best American Essays 2022 and 2023 and won a 2023 AWP Intro Journal Award. Laura’s work has been supported by the Ragdale Foundation, the Fine Arts Work Center, Longleaf Writers, and the National Endowment for the Arts with a residency at VCCA. She is a veteran of the US Air Force where she piloted C-130s. An MFA candidate at Northwestern University, Laura is currently serving as a fiction editor at TriQuarterly and on the Ragdale Curatorial Council.
