Kites are known as barriletes in Guatemala. The practice of flying barriletes during Día de Muertos (the Day of the Dead) festivities is a tradition connected to their Mayan ancestry. The culture of making beautiful giant kites and flying them over the cemeteries of Guatemala is a form of honoring and communicating with ancestors, family members and friends that have passed on. Today we will learn more about this Mayan tradition celebrating the dead through the art of giant kites, and create our own colorful barriletes in honor of the upcoming Día de Muertos celebrated on Nov. 1 and 2.
Open to the public
