Description:
In Voice-First, novelist Thammika Songkaeo (Stamford Hospital) argues that voice is more important than plot in captivating stories. An interactive lecture with reading, writing, and editing exercises, this session focuses on how voice emerges through stance, rhythm, and compression. Participants will work through exercises designed to isolate and stress-test voice, identifying when their writing sounds most alive—and how to make decisions that keep it that way. Designed for fiction and narrative nonfiction writers, this session equips participants with clear, usable tools to write with greater authority and to protect a voice that cannot be mistaken for anyone else.
About the Speaker:
Thammika Songkaeo
Thammika Songkaeo is a transnational novelist, essayist, and filmmaker of Thai origin whose work probes the quiet tensions of identity, motherhood, and belonging. Described by Elle Singapore as “dissecting motherhood, marriage, and the cost of selfhood with razor-sharp precision,” her debut novel, Stamford Hospital, was named by Prestige as one of the 10 must-reads for International Women’s Day 2025, alongside works by Margaret Atwood and Simone de Beauvoir. A lifelong global nomad since 1992, Songkaeo brings a third-culture lens to her storytelling.
