Borys Liatoshynsky (1895–1968) was one of the most prominent figures in Ukrainian classical music of the 20th century. This year we celebrate his 130th anniversary.
Liatoshynsky had all the prerequisites for a successful international career—were it not for
the epoch in which he lived. His life spanned two world wars, the Bilshovyk coup, the Holodomor and Stalinist terror. As an artist with a European worldview who sought to cultivate cross-cultural dialogue between Ukrainian and Western musical traditions, Liatoshynsky often found himself in conflict with Soviet authorities.
He became a mentor to several generations of Ukrainian musicians, sharing his knowledge as a lifelong professor at the Kyiv Conservatory. It was his students who, in the 1960s, formed the informal collective now known as the “Kyiv Avant-
garde.”
