**** In September 2001, an American television production company, took over Woodchester Mansion for about a month while making an episode of the American paranormal TV series Scariest Places on Earth.***** 👻👻
Hidden deep in a secluded Cotswold valley, Woodchester Mansion is a Grade I listed Victorian Gothic mansion that was never completed. Building began in the 1850s for wealthy Catholic convert William Leigh, principally to designs by local architect Benjamin Bucknall. Work gradually petered out during the 1860s, and Leigh died in 1873 with his extraordinary house still unfinished.
Interestingly, the Woodchester Mansion Trust itself records the paranormal stories associated with the building. Reported apparitions include:
👧 A young girl and a separate young woman
🔨 A short man, possibly a stonemason
👤 A man apparently trying to hide
🔎 Another man apparently searching for somebody
🇺🇸 An American airman
😱 A disembodied or floating head
🐎 A ghostly horseman on the drive.
This is probably the best Halloween fact of the lot because there's nothing supernatural about it.
Woodchester is an important home for greater and lesser horseshoe bats. The National Trust says the Mansion contains a summer maternity roost and that Woodchester has the only breeding colony of greater horseshoe bats east of the River Severn. They emerge around dusk to hunt insects through the valley.
So you've got an abandoned Gothic mansion…
deep in ancient woodland…
ghost stories…
a phantom horseman…
strange footsteps and music…
and an actual colony of rare bats living inside it.
You really couldn't design a better Halloween venue. 😂

We will aim to get to the mansion at 2pm.
We will start the hike at the Woodchester Mansion, National Trust car park, Nympsfield, GL10 3UP at 10am.
We will leave the car park follow a part of the Cotswold Way untill we get Coaley Peak & Nympsfield Long Barrow.
Coaley Peak sits high on the Cotswold escarpment with huge views west across the Severn Valley (definitely on of my favourite Cotswold view points) . On a clear day it's a dramatic contrast to the enclosed Woodchester valley you'll enter later.
And yes — right beside Coaley Peak is Nympsfield Long Barrow, a genuine Neolithic burial monument. English Heritage confirms excavations recovered the remains of at least 13 people, along with Neolithic pottery. One of the finds was the skeleton of a child placed inside a stone cist in the northern burial chamber.
“Before we even reach the haunted mansion, we're standing beside a burial place that's thousands of years old.”
After leaving the high ground we will walk through the pretty village of Nympsfield then enter Woodchester Woods from the East.
We will explore the 5 Lakes -
The famous chain of lakes consist of Brick Kiln Pond, Old Pond, Middle Pond, Kennel Pond and Parkmill Pond. The lakes were created by damming the stream running through the valley and were already part of the landscape by the 18th century.
Then after the woodlands, boat house and lakes will approch the mansion 👻.
We will aim to get here for 2pm.
Their is a charge of £13 to enter the mansion. This is one mile away from our car park.
We will explore the mansion then head of back to the cars as a group.
Please bring layers, adequate footwear (plenty of fields and woodlands) and enough snacks and water to sustain you.
