One Day. 36 Plays. A Conversation about Democracy.Join us at the Flynn for a FREE, full day of performances exploring the current state of democracy. From 11am to 11pm, all 36 plays and monologues commissioned by the Flynn for Women+ on the Edge of Democracy will be performed together for the first time, bringing together an extraordinary collection of voices for one expansive day of theater, ideas, and conversation.
Created in partnership with the Susan Smith Blackburn Prize, one of the most prestigious international awards for women+ playwrights, Women+ on the Edge of Democracy brings together some of the most accomplished playwrights writing today, each responding to a single provocation: What is the current state of Democracy in America?
Funny, fierce, intimate, unsettling, surprising, and deeply human, the plays approach democracy from wildly different directions. The more voices we hear, the more we can understand.
Come curious. Spend they day listening and connecting. The duration is part of the experience.
We hope you'll stay for as much of it as you can—and, if you're up for it, experience all 36 plays from beginning to end. There is something powerful about giving a full day to listening: one voice followed by another, each adding to, challenging, or complicating what came before, until a much larger picture begins to emerge.
You don't have to agree with every voice. You don't have to love every play. The invitation is simply to listen, stay curious, and see what you hear differently by the end of the day.
And the experience doesn't stop at the edge of the stage. Throughout the day, the Flynn lobby will remain open as a place for connection and reflection. Step out between plays, meet someone new, talk about what you're hearing, grab a snack or drink, and return when you're ready. The conversations that happen there are part of the day, too.
There will be scheduled breaks throughout the event, including an hour for dinner when you can head out to one of downtown Burlington's restaurants before returning for the evening performances. Snacks and drinks will be available for purchase at the Flynn throughout the day.
Your free ticket is good for the entire event, and you're welcome to come and go. Or take the invitation all the way and stay with us from the first voice to the last.
FREE and open to all.
