About this Event

SIS Productions joins Women+ on the Edge of Democracy

FREE!

A nationwide act of 50+ theatres in 30+ states coming together to listen to short plays by top female playwrights exploring the state of democracy in America in a free landmark event just before the midterm elections. Join us to show your support for democracy!

This presentation will include the following 15-minute plays:

COMMON GROUND by Lauren M. Gunderson, directed by Miko Premo, featuring Jesse Calixto, Ina Chang, and Kathy Hsieh. Vicious online trolls collide and unite in this absurdist reckoning of self, society, and theatre’s place as our common empathetic ground.

THE BETSY ROSS BOOK OF THE DEAD by Paula Cizmar, directed by Mimi Katano, featuring Adele Lim, Kevin Masayuki Tanner, and Ayo Tushinde. Betsy Ross and her AI Assistant are busy preparing democracy for its descent into The Underworld when a 21st-century human pops into the portal to undermine their project and change the course of history.

MAYA by Dael Orlandersmith, directed by Michelle Blackmon, featuring Angie Bolton. The power of books can never be taken for granted.

SEARCHING FOR ELSIE PARRISH by Heidi Schreck, directed by Kathy Hsieh, featuring Christi Cruz, Mona Leach Grife, and Carol Roscoe. It’s a story about, to quote Rebecca Solnit (and it’s important to cite the source) “never f#%!*$& surrendering.”

To experience a different line-up of plays on Sunday, October 25 at 3pm, please see our joint presentation with Union Arts Center.

This Work was commissioned and originally produced by The Flynn Center for the Performing Arts in Burlington, Vermont. Jay Wahl, Executive Director. In Partnership with the Susan Smith Blackburn Prize.
