Two women, two different worlds,
One friendship that will change them both forever…
Emma Mitchel, daughter of a Bethlehem Steel executive, has everything money can buy, except her freedom. Emma longs to escape her gilded cage, but her domineering mother’s only goal is to marry her off. Faced with an impossible choice, will Emma save her family or follow her heart?
Maeve McCarthy, the daughter of Irish immigrants, knows the true cost of steel. Her father and brother toil in the heat of the blast furnaces, while she resigns herself to the tedium of the silk mill. A new friendship offers an opportunity beyond her wildest dreams, but then a scandal threatens to destroy everything.
Women of Steel is a saga of the early 20th century when steel was king, and Pennsylvania’s Bethlehem Steel Company was the second-largest producer in America. A turbulent time racked by labor unrest, a devastating epidemic, and the rise of women’s rights. It is also the immersive story of two women whose special bond survives love, loss, and terrible tragedy as they finally find their places in the modern world.
About the Author:
Anne Supsic is a docent at the Moravian Museum in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, a huge fan of that city, a dedicated Francophile, and a bookmark collector. When she first learned about a possible romantic relationship between the Marquis de Lafayette and a Moravian Single Sister named Liesl Boeckel, she knew she had found the story she was meant to tell.
After the success of her first book, The Bookmark, Anne focused on South Bethlehem during the Gilded Age when steel was king, and Bethlehem Steel became the second-largest producer in the country. Against this backdrop, an unlikely friendship between the daughter of a Bethlehem Steel executive and the daughter of Irish immigrants whose father and brother work at the steel mill, changes both women forever.
When she’s not at home, Anne is traveling the world with her husband (seventy-three countries and counting), exploring other cultures, and of course, searching for bookmarks.
