Fenscape Archaeology, Natural Heritage and Enviromental Change
In the Fens of Eastern England
Dr Phil Stastney,
Department of Archaeology, University of Cambridge
The Fens of eastern England were once the largest area of lowland wetland in the UK and remain one of the most intensively investigated archaeological landscapes in the country. Since 2023, the Fenscapes Project, based at the McDonald Institute in Cambridge, has been bringing together the wealth of existing data on the archaeology and palaeoenvironments of this fascinating region, with the aim of telling the stories of how human life, landscapes and habitats have changed over the last 5,000 years.
This presentation will discuss some of the initial results of the Fenscapes Project, including new reconstructions of landscape change through time; a reconsideration of existing narratives of how people lived and worked in the Fens through later prehistory and beyond; and an exploration of where important gaps in our knowledge remain, and what these might mean for future research and investigation.
