The defence of the UK during the Second World War is often seen as unprofessional, bumbling and poorly planned, with old men and young boys of the Home Guard being expected to sacrifice themselves in the event of invasion to give the army a chance to prepare.
In reality, the defence of the UK was anything but unprofessional and poorly planned, with units of the Territorial Army, Regular Army, Free and Commonwealth forces deployed to take on the invasion if and when it came.
Norfolk found itself on the front-line from the outbreak of war and would remain a key area of vulnerability and defence throughout. Today the story of defence often focusses solely on the Home Guard, and in many cases attributes roles to them which they rarely or never undertook.
This talk will focus on the role of the professional soldiers of the Army and outline how Norfolk was to be defended at key points of the war, in particular 1939, 1940 and 1941. The units that defended the county and the defensive strategies employed will be presented, along with an appraisal of what archaeological investigation of surviving defences today can tell us about the chronically forgotten and overlooked role of the Regular and Territorial Army.
