How it works: Do you know the witches dance? Women (and Men) from around the world celebrate the dance to honor unity of women and female empowerment.
The Her-Story Behind The Dance
Where It All Started, In April of 2016, the women of Wolfshagen im Harz, Germany, were celebrating Walpurgis Night, a holiday that dates back to the pagan fertility rites and the coming of spring combined with the celebration of the Christian feast day of Saint Walpurga.
Their celebrations included a choreographed dance to Schüttel deinen Speck, in English: Shake Your Bacon, by German Reggae-Pop artist, Peter Fox.
They posted a video of their dance on Youtube and it went viral. It quickly became popular with American women in particular, inspiring many to take up and perform the witch dance live in costume.
Unlike in the original dance in Germany, in America, the dances seem to not be performed in honor of Walpurgis, but rather, for Samhain, also known as Halloween.
As the dance has inspired women of all ages and backgrounds to come together and shake their bacon in unity, it seems to also have turned Peter Fox's Schüttel deinen Speck into a sort of universal anthem for female power.Once the music hits, we gather, we dance, and then we vanish back into the shadows!
