Borrowed. Bent. Reinvented.Nothing comes from nowhere. Every artist borrows, remembers, transforms—and sometimes gleefully turns the past on its head.
Stravinsky raids centuries-old Italian music to create the sparkling Pulcinella. Shostakovich takes the American hit Tea for Two and sends it spinning through the orchestra. Anna Clyne’s Pivot ricochets between musical worlds, while Khachaturian gives us a galop with its foot firmly on the accelerator. Even Beethoven, in his irrepressible Eighth Symphony, seems to be winking at everything a symphony is supposed to be.
This is music with a twinkle in its eye. It dances, teases, borrows and surprises—reminding us that classical music needn’t always take itself quite so seriously. Behind all the playfulness, though, is something wonderfully human: our instinct to take what we inherit and make something new from it.
Throw in the singular voice of Newburgh’s own Decora, and you have an evening about where music comes from—and what happens when somebody grabs hold of it and makes it entirely their own.
