Presentation Topic: California's Invasion of Privacy Act (CIPA) has become the most common legal theory used against website owners over their analytics, session replay, and advertising technologies, with demand letters and class actions accelerating. Julie Oberweis, CIPP/US, Founder and Chief Operating Officer of Vault JS, breaks down what the statute actually prohibits, how companies are defending themselves, and what's really happening in the browser — what fires before a consent banner is answered, what ends up inside a pixel payload, how session replay and chat vendors capture form fields and keystrokes, and why server-side tagging didn't make the problem go away. She closes with how courts have split on these technical facts, what SB 690 does and doesn't change when it takes effect in January 2027, and a short list of things to test on your own properties.
Speaker Bio: Julie Oberweis, Co-Founder and COO of Vault JS, focuses on empowering some of the largest companies in the world to safeguard customer PII by delivering advanced monitoring and analysis of digital tracking technologies across web and mobile platforms.
She has over two decades of experience scaling data-driven companies, from bootstrapping Stratigent into a multimillion-dollar digital analytics consultancy to co-founding and serving on the board of Ensighten, a pioneer in tag management. Julie applies her entrepreneurial spirit and deep expertise in data privacy, operations, and leadership to drive privacy and security of user data. Her deep love of the privacy industry was born from her lack of privacy at home where she is raising 5 children.
Julie holds a BS from University of Illinois and an MS from Stanford University. She is a CFA Charterholder and holds CIPP/US certification for privacy.
