We’re calling the concert Winter Warmers, not because we’re predicting a chilly December, you understand. It’s the heart-warming songs we’ve included in this year’s programme – carols like Away in a manger sung to a beautiful Breton folk melody and old broadside ballads like Drive the cold winter away (saved from oblivion by the diarist Samuel Pepys who was an avid collector of the pop songs of his day). There are a few edgy pieces like Sydney Carter’s dark lullaby The Crow on the Cradle (not one to lull you to an easy sleep). And the jolly-sounding A-Soulin’ by the American folk trio Peter, Paul and Mary is a strange mashup of a Halloween song and a Christmas carol. But the warming magic of Christmas is the predominant them in our programme of short Yuletide and winter songs that will set you up for a joyful , peaceful, fun and festive season. All our concerts are charity fundraisers. This time the Countess of Brecknock Hospice in Andover will benefit.
