Photorealism isn’t about carefully painting every inch of your subject—it’s about knowing exactly where the work matters most.
In this two-week watercolor workshop, we’ll work from a photograph and take a deep dive into the elements that make a painting feel truly realistic: glowing sunlight, cast shadows, negative space, and the subtle shifts in value that create depth and dimension.
This painting is an exercise in putting more work where you might least expect it—and simplifying or even ignoring the areas you may assume need the most attention. You’ll learn how to study a reference photo, identify what is actually creating the illusion of realism, and make thoughtful decisions about where to add detail, where to soften, and where to let the light do the work.
Week One: We’ll begin with a study of negative space and how it shapes a strong composition. Working from light to dark, we’ll lay down the sunlight’s glow and build the painting’s first layers.
Week Two: We’ll focus on understanding values and contrast—where details matter and, just as importantly, where restraint matters. We’ll build the final layers and add the carefully selected details that bring the painting to life.
All supplies are provided. There is no need to bring any of your own materials.
Feel free to bring your favorite food or beverage to enjoy while you paint. Doors open 15 minutes before class begins. Please arrive early enough to settle in so we can begin on time.
This class is for ages 12 and older.
All registrations are final sale. No refunds, credits, rescheduling, or make-up classes will be offered. If you’re unable to attend, a friend or loved one may attend in your place.
