About I AM: Indigenous Artist Mentorship
I AM: Indigenous Artist Mentorship brings together new work by 13 Indigenous artists spanning nations, generations, and career stages.
The exhibition continues the journey that began with The Ancestors Are Talking, a 2025 exhibition curated by Joseph M. Sanchez, the last surviving member of the “Indigenous Group of Seven.” Guided by Sanchez and AJA Louden through a year-long mentorship program, participating artists created new work in response to the exhibition and its artistic legacy.
Exploring subjects ranging from kinship and spirituality to popular culture and self-representation, the artists collectively declare: I am here. I am multifaceted. I am the past, present, and future of Canadian art.
The exhibition is organized by The Whyte and curated by emerging Métis curator Emma De Sousa, whose curatorial practice is rooted in kiyokewin (visiting methodology) and wahkohtowin (kinship and reciprocity praxis).
About Sitting Wind
This exhibition explores the work and life of Îethka (Stoney) artist Ganutha Îge (Sitting Wind), also known as Frank Kaquitts (1925- 2002). Bringing together paintings from the collection of Peter Whyte and Catharine Robb Whyte alongside archival materials and audio, the exhibition offers an opportunity to spend time with Sitting Wind’s work and learn more about the artist, his life, and his enduring connections to this place.
The exhibition is organized by The Whyte and curated by the Hosting Indigenous Community Relations (HICR) team and Curatorial team in collaboration with the Kaquitts family.
We gratefully acknowledge the support of TD Bank Group, the Alberta Foundation for the Arts, Bowstrings Heritage Foundation, the Calgary Foundation, and Rimrock Banff.
