The Diggers was a communitarian movement during the English Revolution. Other movements at the time included the Levellers, the Ranters and the Parliamentarians. This period from 1642 to 1660 represents Europe's earliest democratic uprising against absolutist monarchism. England was functionally a republic from 1649 till 1660. It ended in a military dictatorship by Oliver Cromwell, and then the return of constitutional monarchism.
The political and legal arrangements from this period set the stage for the expanding British empire. The various political ideals expressed at the time can be seen as prototypes of later ideologies, such as liberalism and communism.
