Join local willow weaver Natalie McLay of Trottiscliffe Willow for a full-day immersive willow weaving workshop at Great Comp Garden.This hands-on course is perfect for beginners and those with some experience who would like to develop their skills while creating unique pieces for the garden.
During the morning session, participants will learn traditional willow weaving techniques while making a garden obelisk — ideal for supporting climbing plants or adding structure to borders. In the afternoon, attendees can choose to create either a decorative dragonfly, a bird, or a practical willow feeder, guided step-by-step by Natalie.
The session will take place in our newly opened Garden Room inside Great Comp House.
This relaxed and friendly workshop offers the chance to work creatively with natural materials, learn a traditional craft, and enjoy a peaceful day in the garden.

What to Expect:
Welcome & Introduction: Overview of the day, tools, materials, and safety guidance
Morning Session – Garden Obelisk: Learn core willow weaving techniques and construct a garden structure
Lunch Break: Lunch will be provided in The Old Dairy Tearoom specially for workshop participants.
Afternoon Session – Decorative Piece: Create a willow dragonfly, bird, or feeder
Wrap-up & Discussion: Finishing touches, care advice, and a chance to share your work
Participants should wear comfortable clothes as working with willow can sometimes be rather messy! Aprons are provided.
The course is suitable for those over 16 with reasonable hand/wrist strength but no experience is needed.
Please note you will be asked to read and fill out a health and safety waiver form on the day.
