Monthly outdoor nature-based craft workshops, for children age 7 and up.
About this Event

Join us at the for a nature-based crafting workshop series, led by nature-based educator Èské Addams and designed especially for young learners, age 7 and up. This is a great opportunity for your child to learn various nature-based crafting skills and to engage directly with different types of organic materials and hand tools.

🌿 What Students Can Expect:

Each month at Wildcrafternoons, we'll gather in the Fibershed's outdoor classroom to explore hands-on projects which encourage connection with natural materials. Through these activities, kids will engage with natural surroundings, various crafting projects, and our imaginations.

  • 🐞 Each workshop includes collaborative discussion, guided or instructional crafting time, and open exploration of the craft at hand; encouraging learners to harness valuable skills while deepening their understanding and relationship with the natural world.
  • 🌲 Each workshop will last for approximately two hours. Activities are flexibly designed and children are invited to participate at their own pace.
  • 🪵 We’ll be working entirely outdoors in a semi-shaded area. Seating will be on stumps or on canvas/blankets on the ground. Attendees are welcome to bring their own picnic blankets and/or cushions for personal comfort.

♿ Wildcrafternoon workshops will be hosted primarily in the outdoor classroom which is not currently ADA accessible (uneven woodchip paths, narrow bridge over a creek). However, we can easily relocate to the main Fibershed building event area, if any student or their caregiver requires the workshop to be held in an ADA accesible location.

Students must be at least 7 years of age. Although the creativity and energy of younger children are such a joy to experience, most Wildcrafternoon Workshops will be a bit too advanced for such little hands, requiring a certain minimum level of skills and abilities.

🌿 Workshop Activiy Lineup:
  • 📜 Making Paper, Seedballs, & Paper-pulp Scupltures,
  • 📚 Bookbinding & Nature journaling,
  • 🍂 Flower pressing & Nature collages,
  • 🧺 Basket & Cordage weaving,
  • 🍃 Eco-printing & Plant dyeing,
  • and more! ✨

🌿 Students Should Bring:
  • A full water bottle, and a snack if desired.
  • Clothing layers suitable for the weather.
  • Optional: a picnic blanket or cushion for more comfortable crafting time.
  • Activity materials: For certain workshops, students may be asked to bring something from home for certain activities such as paper making, weaving, eco-printing, etc.

🌿 How to Participate as a Caregiver:
  • 🪴 This workshop series is specifically designed for children learners. For adults interested in learning these crafts themselves, Fibershed hosts many other workshops and classes designed specifically for adults.
  • 🤝 Caregivers are encouraged to attend the workshop intro, so they can determine if their child will need help with certain aspects fo the activity. If your child is still working on certain fine motor skills or requires other direct assistance, you are of course welcome to assist them directly. For those who are ready and able to work independently, we encourage caregivers to hang back and allow space for their child’s individual exploration.
  • 🪺 Caregivers are asked to remain on site during the workshop, as this workshop series is not (currently) a drop-off program. There are many lovely spots around the Fibershed Learning Center campus where you can enjoy the scenery, get some remote work done, read a book, and so on.

🌿Registration:

While most other Fibershed workshops use a need-based scholarship application fee structure, this workshop series uses a self-reporting sliding-scale approach(based on the model), which was personally designed by the teacher and is used in all of her educational offerings. As well, all eventbrite fees are included in the ticket cost to maximize access for all.

  • This sliding scale has been crafted so that each tier to reflects the labor, materials, and expertise that goes into each session, while also considering that participants come from varying financial circumstances and privilege.
  • It is recognized that income bracket doesn’t always reflect financial ability, and all children deserve access to quality programming regardless of financial privilege or lack thereof.
  • You are invited to choose the amount that feels right for you, to pay what you can within your means, and to contribute generously toward accessibility if you are able.
  • No questions asked, no justification needed, and no one turned away for lack of funds. If the lowest ticket tier is not accessible for you, please reach out via direct message or email to make arrangements.

When registering your child for this workshop, please consider donating to the Fibershed Scholarship Fund (via the Add-Ons page) to support community access to the many other wonderful offerings at the Fibershed Learning Center.
