About this Event
Writing in experimental and short forms of poetry can open pathways to observations of place, and open our mind and perceptions to new insights about ourselves. Whether you have a writing practice, a nature journal, or just want fresh ways of connecting to the outdoors, come spend a relaxing day exploring Bear Valley Creek through science and poetry!
We’ll observe relationships between streams and their surroundings, notice the marks of stream changes with storms and seasons, and consider the many kinds of life that depend on, and also shape, stream dynamics. As we explore these relationships, we’ll hone our own sensitivity, understanding and observational skills through writing and sketching. We’ll playfully probe the boundaries of our own categories and assumptions, using flowing water – that most constant and changeable substance – to inspire us.
There will be short walks between concentrated work, including alternating periods of reflection, observation and discussion. No previous experience with drawing, writing – or streams – required!
Todd Gilens is a Bay Area artist, writer, and educator. In recent work he assisted scientists surveying streams in the Sierra Nevada, collected historic writing in archives, and researched the water concepts of ancient Greece and Rome. His book Writing in Place will be published by the University of Nevada Press in 2027.
