About this Event
Join us for a drawing class focused on elegant and expressive eagle owls. Also known as bubo bubo, this group includes some of the largest species of owl on earth (some are the size of eagles, hence the name) and is defined by bright orange eyes and those gorgeous “ear tufts”. Despite the name, these tufts have nothing to do with hearing. They’re thought to have several uses including helping these woodland birds blend into their surroundings, attracting mates, and expressing mood. If an eagle owl’s tufts are flat to the head this indicates discontent, while a cool and calm eagle owl sports her tufts in a proud upward position.
We will be joined by three gorgeous birds- Inya the African spotted eagle owl, Socks the Indian eagle owl and Moe the European eagle owl, who is a bit of a giant and the biggest of the bunch. Our falconer will highlight the similarities and differences between the group and point out the adaptations that make each species so well adapted to their native environment. We may also be joined by some rather delightful owlets, but this is dependent on when the eggs hatch… Keep your talons crossed!
Owls feature in our current outdoor exhibition celebrating 10 years of Wild Life Drawing, and we will be opening early for a special guided tour around The More You Look with WLD founder Jennie Webber, after hours on the nature reserve at Camley Street. Enjoy the artworks in the peace and quiet of a summer's evening.
The class will be led by illustrator Jennie Webber, who will get you started with a drawing demo and her top tips for drawing a moving subject. Throughout the session, Jennie will be on hand with as much creative guidance as you would like, and our falconer will be happy to answer any questions you have about the owls. We will provide paper, drawing boards and an array of colourful materials, but do bring along your own kit if you’d like. The class is open to all abilities, and all artistic styles are celebrated. By the end of the class, you will have produced some sketches to be proud of and will have gained a deeper understanding of this majestic species group.
Here at Wild Life Drawing we are a small team dedicated to animal welfare. We only ever work with the finest animal handlers, who treat their animals with care and respect, and healthy animals who are happy around humans. The falconer who keeps these birds is a trusted and experienced specialist who works with the RSPCA to rescue, rehabilitate and re-release wild birds of prey around the South of England.
