Join us for a presentation on Owls of Kentucky. Our guest speaker, Joyce Bender, will give us an overview of owls that can be found in Kentucky and some of the fascinating adaptations that make them such successful predators.Bio: Joyce Bender managed the state nature preserve system for the Kentucky State Nature Preserves Commission for 31 years. She is the first woman to conduct prescribed burns in Kentucky and was a founding member and past president of the Kentucky Prescribed Fire Council. She also was a founding member and past president of the Kentucky Invasive Plant Council.
Joyce is from Ohio, where she earned her undergraduate and graduate degrees. She began her career with the Ohio Division of Natural Areas and Preserves in 1980 and worked for the Nature Conservancy in Ohio and Minnesota prior to her arrival in Kentucky.
Joyce has been recognized for her efforts in protecting, managing and teaching about Kentucky's natural heritage by a number of statewide organizations. Her work was recognized nationally when she received the Carl N. Becker Stewardship Award from the Natural Areas Association and when she was inducted into the Invasive Species Management Hall of Fame.
Joyce's focus in retirement continues to be helping maintain Kentucky's natural areas. She volunteers her time engaging the public so that they find the connection that inspires them to value these places and carry on the work to keep them safe.
