Along the headwaters of the Elkhorn Creek in Northeastern Fayette County, Headwater Community Farm cultivates nutrient-dense produce for community partners and supports small local agribusinesses in Lexington. This year, the farm introduced its first-ever Community Shared Agriculture (CSA) program, further enhancing its commitment to providing local, fresh produce to the community. On this 30-acre parcel of leased land, Lexington nonprofit Seedleaf provides plots to small-scale growers and offers community education on organic agriculture and agroforestry.Over the past three years, Seedleaf staff and Market Gardeners have worked with the land at Headwater Farm, fostering growth and planting seeds for the future. Through the farm’s Market Gardener program, graduate gardeners plant and tend vegetable, herb and flower crops to support their agri-businesses at the Lexington Farmers Market. In addition to the annual crops, Seedleaf continues to add a broad diversity of perennials for soil and water protection, wildlife and pollinator habitat, food and visual aesthetics. By mimicking nature’s design, Headwater Farm is evolving to support thriving, healthy social and ecological systems.
