Screening in a new 4K restoration, Luchino Visconti's ravishing adaptation of Dostoyevsky's short story translates the romantic tale of a chance meeting between a lonely young man (Marcello Mastroianni, "8½") and a lovelorn young woman (Maria Schell) into a fog-shrouded black-and-white dream.Luchino Visconti | 1957 | In Italian with English subtitles | 101 minutes | NR | 4K DCP

“Luchino Visconti’s magnificent adaptation of Dostoyevsky’s short story "White Nights," which also inspired Robert Bresson’s "Four Nights of a Dreamer," reimagines the romantic yet devastating tale in the Italian port city of Livorno, harnessing the bewitching chemistry between Marcello Mastroianni and Maria Schell. Mario (Mastroianni), a lonely city dweller, wanders the frigid streets until he encounters a young woman crying on a canal bridge. Enchanted yet cautious, Mario approaches the woman, Natalia (Schell), who reveals that she is awaiting her lover’s return. Having made a promise to reunite with her true love in a year, Natalia shares her tragic backstory with Mario, whose sights are set on winning her affection. The lonely souls find solace in each other, drawn in by a sense of warmth and comfort during the cold winter nights. Their passion reaches a crescendo when they release their inhibitions in an unforgettable dance sequence. Their uncertain romance wavers as they drift through the beautifully haunting set constructed entirely on a Cinecittà sound stage, captured in striking black-and-white cinematography by Visconti’s frequent collaborator Giuseppe Rotunno.“ —Jacob Crepeault, Toronto International Film Festival
