Komuroan is a renowned Kyoto kimono atelier dedicated to the art of Yuzen, a traditional Japanese dyeing technique passed down through generations.
For its first presentation overseas, Komuroan brings the artistry of Kyoto to New York City, exploring traditional Japanese Wagara motifs through a contemporary lens. From iconic imagery inspired by Hokusai’s Great Wave to bold abstract designs, each kimono reflects a dialogue between heritage and modern expression.
At the heart of Komuroan is Waza, the skill, technique, and artistry of making. Every stage of the process is completed in house by a team of skilled artisans at their Kyoto workshop, preserving the depth of traditional Yuzen craftsmanship while continuing to explore its possibilities today.
Elegant yet playful, traditional yet unexpected, Komuroan’s kimono reveal how an exquisite centuries old craft can continue to evolve.
WHIMSICAL WAZA invites New York audiences to experience Kyoto Yuzen not simply as tradition, but as a living art form.
