Where Light Leaves a Trace by Michelle Mongey
Pop Up Exhibit November 6th - 23rd
Where Light Leaves a Trace presents a collection of cyanotypes inspired by the landscapes of Fernie, Canada. Using pressed plants collected during walks and hikes, the artist creates patterns on fabric that transform under UV light into rich, deep blues.
The work explores the interplay of intention and chance, permanence and impermanence, capturing fleeting forms of nature and the subtle traces of light. Each piece becomes a memory of place, a quiet celebration of the overlooked poetry in leaves, flowers, and the natural world.
About the Artist
Michelle Mongey is a painter, designer, and illustrator originally from Sydney, Australia, now based in Fernie, Canada. Her creative practice has been shaped by a lifelong love of art, with painting emerging as her primary medium during her teenage years. Much of her early work was created for friends and family, rooted in personal connection and storytelling, with each piece carrying a sense of intimacy, care, and meaning.
Since relocating to Fernie, Michelle’s work has been deeply influenced by her surroundings and her love of being outdoors. The rugged landscapes, seasonal shifts, and slower rhythms of mountain life have become an integral part of her creative process, encouraging a more intentional and tactile approach to making.
In recent years, her practice has expanded to include cyanotype, an analogue photographic process that uses UV light to create striking negative images. Drawn to its experimental nature, Michelle works with flora collected during walks and time spent exploring the Rocky Mountains, allowing the environment to directly shape each piece. Through this process, she explores themes of place, memory, and impermanence, blending traditional painting sensibilities with natural materials. Her work reflects a quiet dialogue between art and landscape, grounded in personal experience and a deep appreciation for the natural world.
