About this Event

Work might suck, but what would you do if you could be the boss?

Sliding Scale Tickets: $5 - $25 | No one turned away for lack of funds | FREE for La Peña Members. Tickets available online and at the door until we reach capacity. All are welcome. Seating will be theater-style.

A tribute to anyone who has ever been overworked, underpaid, and pushed to the edge by an ungrateful boss.

Join us for a screening of 9 to 5 (1980), the beloved classic starring Dolly Parton, Jane Fonda, and Lily Tomlin, inspired by the real-life organization 9to5, founded in Boston in 1973 by women office workers organizing against workplace discrimination and harassment.

Followed by a political education community discussion on workplace power, labor organizing, and what it looks like to collectively imagine and build something better.

For accessibility requests, please contact us at least two weeks in advance. Email us at [email protected].

About the film

9 to 5 (1980) follows three overworked and underpaid office workers — Judy (Jane Fonda), Violet (Lily Tomlin), and Doralee (Dolly Parton) — who bond over their shared mistreatment by a sexist, egotistical boss and decide to take matters into their own hands. What follows is a fantasy of workplace liberation, flexible scheduling, childcare support, and a boss finally getting what he deserves.

Directly inspired by the real life organization 9to5, founded in Boston in 1973 by women office workers organizing against workplace discrimination and harassment, the film smuggled radical ideas of labor, gender, and power into mainstream culture and became a classic in the process.

Fifty years later, pay disparities, workplace discrimination, and the fight for childcare and a living wage remain daily realities and the intersection of racism and sexism in the workplace remains as urgent as ever for women, people of color, non-binary people, and low-income workers.
